Project-based learning in NGSS for VT and NH teachers of grades 5–12

2019/20 session starts fall 2019

Energy Action Project Institute (part of the Green School Energy Challenge) supports teachers to guide students’ action-focused, project-based learning that helps transform energy use in their local context. The course begins with a one-day, face-to-face session that supports teachers using project-based learning scaffolds and instructional tools to help students initiate, understand, plan, manage and progress toward their project goals. Throughout the year, curriculum resources, equipment, and technical and educational support is provided to teachers who commit to undertaking projects designed to reduce carbon emissions. This academics-to-action program bridges science and engineering with social aspects of addressing climate change, saves money for communities, and empowers youth. Teachers are strongly encouraged to sign up for this program in teams from the same school.

Grades 6–12: STEM

To take part in this program, teachers must commit to undertake at least one project that will use scientific analysis and data-based decision-making to save electric, thermal, or transportation energy at the school, in students’ homes, or in the community.

Grades 5–6: STEAM

The STEAM engagement strand is specifically designed for teachers of younger grades, with less emphasis on data and analysis and additional arts and social studies integration. To take part in this program, a teacher must commit to undertake at least one grade-appropriate project that will raise awareness of energy use and save electric, thermal, or transportation energy at the school, in students’ homes, or in the community.

Program details

Teachers will be supported by VEEP staff through:

  • One in-person meeting day, October 8, 2019, in Montpelier, VT. Teachers are invited to bring their project ideas and will leave with an instructor's toolkit for supporting project-focused learning.
  • Additional after-school meetings of teachers and VEEP/NHEEP staff to share ideas and resources, which can be joined in person or virtually.
  • VEEP/NHEEP staff will be available to support curriculum, student learning, and classroom/school projects.
  • Teachers will receive free use of two VEEP curriculum support kits during the school year, with additional kits at half price.

Graduate credit & PD hours

Teachers can choose whether to take this program for:

  • Three graduate credits: $750 per teacher
  • 8-15 PD hours: $50 per teacher

Teachers taking this course for graduate credits will produce a sequencing plan, lesson plan, or unit plan that can be shared with other teachers undertaking similar projects.
