Virtual STEM labs

VEEP and NHEEP are offering virtual STEM labs to learn about specific energy topics and practice science and engineering design. Groups will meet over several weeks with an online instructor to focus on specific energy-related STEM subjects appropriate for homeschool students, students learning from home, or students just interested in the topic.

These programs have a minimum # of students needed to run, and are capped at 10 students, so sign up as soon as you can.  Registration closes 10 days prior to the start of the program to give us time to get materials out to all students.

2022-2023 STEM Labs

See descriptions of STEM labs below.

Come join us as we explore this wondrous, magic-like phenomenon we call electricity.  These 4 lessons, filled with hands-on activities, will help you understand the science behind that plug in the wall.  Each participant will receive an equipment kit to use during the lab.

Grades: 4-9

# of Sessions: 4

Educator: Julian Leon

Equipment cost to borrow: $20

Join us for this engineering challenge to discover what we can do with the power of the wind! What is wind? How can we use it to generate electricity? Can we use wind to improve lives and help the environment? Participants will design and build their own wind turbine and discover other possible wind-based solutions. A fan and tape or glue will be needed for these lessons, all other materials will be provided. *While both STEM labs investigate wind, "Power of the Wind" goes beyond "Wind Fundamentals" and will not be repetitive if students have previously taken our Wind Fundamentals course. Power of the Wind is the next step after Wind Fundamentals.*

Grades: 4-6

Wind fundamentals  - $15

Join us for a hands-on lab to explore the power of wind! Participants will be guided through a set of 3 lessons that will culminate in designing a wind-powered sail car. A fan will be needed for these lessons, all other materials will be provided.

Grades: 1-3

# of Sessions: 3

Date: Wednesdays, 10/19, 10/26, & 11/2

Time: 9:30AM-10:30AM

Educator: Kaity White

Equipment cost to borrow: $15

Button Up - Home Weatherization - $20

Join us as we explore the science of heat transfer and how it relates to your home.  Using equipment from VEEP and some of your common household materials, we’ll investigate ways to keep you warm and toasty this winter but use less energy doing it.

Grades: 5-9

# of Sessions: 3

Date: Wednesdays: 11/30, 12/7, 12/14

Time: 3:30PM-4:30PM

Educator: Julian Leon

Equipment cost to borrow: $20

How do we generate electricity? What are some of its environmental impacts?  Students will use hands-on activities, video, discussion, and demos to answer these questions and more. Explore Faraday’s coil and engineer with renewable models like solar and wind power. We’ll learn about the energy use of our lights and appliances and brainstorm ways to use less electricity.

Grades: 4-6

I am aware that this is an online virtual classroom in which students will be sharing audio and video. There will be one or more teacher(s) and multiple students. VEEP/NHEEP’s online safety protocol means that a single educator will never be alone with a single student.* We will not record the classes.  Students will be expected to behave respectfully, appropriately and safely and will be asked to leave the classroom if they are not following these expectations at the discretion of the instructor. Students will receive equipment to be able to do hands-on portions of this course, and most of these materials are to be returned to VEEP/NHEEP at the end of the class.

*Contact for the full VEEP/NHEEP online safety protocol.
